The not so smart Apple Notes options

I tried many notes taking application but, in the end, Apple Notes is the one that I prefer for many different reasons: — you can take note both by using the pencil or the keyboard — it’s available both on iOS and MacOs — it’s free

Many of my notes contains snippets of code or example of CLI, and here come the problem: Apple Notes has some features to beautify the text, one of this feature transforms the ” ’ ” into a ” ` ” but also the quote characters are transformed into quote and reversed quote. These characters are also copied as-is when you do a copy&paste: this means that if you copy a snippet of code from Notes to the terminal it will be copied with the “special” characters and, as result, we will copy&paste an incorrect command.

Let’s see how to disable this unwanted options:

Disable smart quotes on Mac

The first option is to disable smart quotes within the single note directly inside the app. While editing a note, simply go to Menu –> Edit –> Show Substitutions and disable “Smart Quotes” (but also “Smart Dashes” and “Smart Links”).

They can also be disabled system-wide by visiting Apple Menu –> System Preferences –> Keyboard –> Text, then uncheck “Use smart quotes and dashes.”

Disable smart quotes on iPad and iPhone

Currently, the only way to disable smart quotes on iPad and iPhone is the system-wide option. Go to Settings –> General –> Keyboard, and toggle off “Smart Punctuation.”

As always…

Just my 2 cents ;-)
